Read on as we share historical and horticultural information with you about the communities in which we serve.

Southeastern Pennsylvania

Kennett Square, at the heart of the Brandywine Valley, is home to Longwood Gardens. An internationally famous horticultural center on the Main Line, Longwood Gardens is over 100 years old. Displaying over 11,000 different types of plants and flowers, Longwood Gardens is 1,050 acres in size.

A Quaker family named Peirce purchased the property -- originally occupied by the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe -- from William Penn in 1700. The working farm with arboretum was purchased in 1906 by Pierre du Pont in order to preserve the trees on the farm. From 1907 to the 1930’s, Mr. du Pont created much of the present Gardens. In 1946, the Gardens were turned over to a foundation set up by Mr. du Pont. Longwood Gardens’ horticultural spirit is expressed by the phrase, ‘...to make the impossible possible.’ “Today the oranges Mr. du Pont desired actually grow in the Estate Fruit House, chrysanthemums are trained to cascade down the walls, blue poppies adorn the Conservatory in the spring, clematis bloom in March, and other impossibilities become a reality every day.”

Suburban Philadelphia

At the center of the tri-state area of southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the second largest city in the United States in 1790, with a population of 28,500 people. Today it is the fifth largest in the nation with 1.5 million people. It is a city that contains many beautiful urban gardens and squares, including the largest landscaped city park in the world – Fairmount Park.

Northern Delaware

Wilmington, Delaware is located in the Brandywine Valley of northern Delaware. Situated approximately thirty minutes from Philadelphia and is midway between New York City and Washington DC. Nationally recognized Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, and the former home of Alfred I. DuPont, Nemours Mansion and Gardens, are located within minutes of downtown Wilmington.

The climate in the tri-state area is hot and humid during the summer, and cold in winter, with an average winter snowfall of 21”. January is Philadelphia's coldest month, with an average temperature of 25.5°F. In July, the warmest month, the average temperature is 85.5°F.
