A Gallery of Garden Styles and Themes

Aardweg Landscaping offers a wide array of designs and garden styles and themes. We plan, design and install Formal and Perennial Gardens, Classic, Japanese Gardens, Mixed Border and Water Gardens, low maintenance Natural Gardens, and others. In addition, it is not uncommon for our clients to request a blend of two styles, such as combining the lines and evergreen “bones“ of a formal garden with the color and joy of perennials behind.

  • The Formal Garden is a beautiful, orderly arrangement of gardened areas utilizing line and structure to form the backbone of the design. Frequently complimenting a distinguished architectural home style, elements of formality can still be utilized in many home landscape designs. Plants appropriate for the formal garden throughout the seasons are usually based on a predominance of evergreens, with perennials and well contained low maintenance trees and shrubs that can be easily pruned.
  • The Japanese Garden will have an emphasis on balance and tranquility, and feature an array of design approaches, from the Zen Garden’s very simple compositions of naturally shaped rock, sand, gravel and moss, to more ornate hill gardens with sculpted plants and flowing water. Water is a fundamental element in a Japanese garden, sometimes portrayed with carefully sculpted gravel rather than actual water. The style and plantings can range from an attempt to recreate nature “au naturel” to strictly controlled, manicured plants and lines. The overarching goal is a sense of serenity in the viewing of the garden.
  • The Casual, Cottage Style or Natural Garden is a low-maintenance garden frequently characterized by curving walkways, ornamental grasses, perennials, the sound of flowing water, and indigenous plants which thrive with less upkeep in their native habitat. Mulch and gravel walkways lined with short grasses and perennials blend well in the tranquil backyard landscape. We’ll design in a bench or chair amongst the fragrant native plants so that you can relax with a book!

Low Maintenance

Never do we encounter a client who asks for a high maintenance garden! Our careful attention to selecting plants that are the appropriate species and size for the specific location in which they are planted results in lower maintenance landscaping designs. The plants and trees will grow together into a fully planted area without blank spaces in the garden, avoiding excessive upkeep. We design gardens that are beautiful, interesting and as low maintenance as possible. For those clients seeking a very low maintenance backyard landscape design, we suggest the Natural Garden, discussed above.

Garden Restoration

Is your front or backyard landscape design a second or third generation garden that you inherited when you purchased your home? We have completed many landscaping designs which selectively incorporate new trees, plants and shrubs into an existing garden to complement and beautify the home, and create new outdoor spaces to enhance the owner’s lifestyle. We are completely at ease in integrating existing desirable materials with a new plan, or removing plants that cannot be used in the new context.

Affordable Pricing

Aardweg Landscaping provides excellent landscaping designs and reliable service at a reasonable price within your budget. If your budget does not permit immediate installation of the entire plan, we can accommodate our clients by allocating the available funds to do what makes sense now, and install the rest as funds permit. We purchase only top quality materials, earning our clients’ trust as they see their gardens maintain a healthy and beautiful appearance through the years.
