One of the premier Brandywine Valley horticultural attractions in northern Delaware is Winterthur Museum and Country Estate, located 6 miles northwest of Wilmington, in Winterthur, Delaware. Originally the country home of Henry Francis du Pont, it became a museum of American decorative arts in 1951. It includes a 60-acre naturalistic garden and world renowned research library.
Henry Francis du Pont believed that color was of prime importance in the garden. “For more than 65 years H. F. du Pont observed succession of bloom, experimenting with thousands of plants and refining the color combinations that are the essence of the Winterthur Garden.” Covering a 1,000-acre woodland preserve, Winterthur’s 60 acre garden includes incomparable specimen plantings and color filled displays.
Winterthur annually hosts a day of steeplechase racing known as Point to Point at Winterthur. It is an entertaining sporting event, a professional horse race, and a noteworthy Brandywine Valley social event, sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association.
