Tips For Repairing a Dry Lawn Along the Main Line

Although we have experienced more rainfall this year, this past week is a good reminder of how hot and dry it can get in the summer along the Main Line.  When we’re facing a dry period, lawns become dry and turn brown. Caring for a dry lawn will require a diligent effort if your landscape is to return to its once vibrant condition. Here are a few tips for repairing a dry lawn along the Main Line:

  • Mulch Dry Spots and Seed
Look for bare spots in your lawn, and loosen the soil around them with a shovel. Add a grass seed mixture and water it as needed. After doing so, you may want to cover the area with a thin layer of straw in order to protect the seed from getting washed away by heavy rain.
  • Add More Seed Throughout
Seed areas of a dry lawn where grass has become especially thin. Use the same seed mixture you applied on your bare spots; however, you don’t need to loosen the soil first. Simply spread the seed and then water carefully in order to spur new growth.
  • Provide Nutrition
Once you have seeded your lawn, it’s essential to add the right nutrients if your grass is to flourish. One that is high in nitrogen can be a good choice for encouraging the growth of new grass. It’s also important to choose the right type of grass seed, and some good choices for this area include Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, garland and zenith.

Landscape Design for a Dry Lawn
If your lawn is especially damaged, consider a new landscape design to help you disguise bare areas. Rather than planting grass, you may desire to create a perennial garden or add water features such as a fountain. Since new grass can take some time to sprout, revamping a landscaping could be preferred, since doing so will help disguise problem areas much sooner.
