The Main Line
The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College is a focal point of horticultural interest on the Main Line with its beautiful horticultural specimens and gardens, and the wide array of ongoing quality educational programming. It is also known for its Perennial Plant Conference. Located on 300 acres, the Arboretum’s collections include hollies, magnolias, and oaks, which have gained recognition as registered collections in the North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC).
A Main Line and southeastern Pennsylvania favorite for visitors is The Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation, located in Merion, Pennsylvania. Quoting their website, “Extensive collections of species and varieties that are extremely significant as genetic resources and as conservation materials such as Lilacs, Peonies, Magnolias, Crab apples, Rhododendrons, Stewartias, etc. make this Arboretum invaluable among other public gardens.” The Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation contains many rare plants uncommon to the region, and formal rose and perennial gardens.
The beautifully designed and immaculately maintained garden on the Chanticleer Estate in Wayne is considered to be “world class”, and is one of the Philadelphia area’s greatest horticultural hidden treasures.
Suburban Philadelphia
Renowned as the “Birthplace of the Nation”, and the “City of Brotherly Love”, Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by William Penn. With many famous historical attractions, Philadelphia is located between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers and is home to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, located at Independence National Historical Park.
The Morris Arboretum, just half an hour north of Center City Philadelphia and just a few minutes away from Plymouth Meeting, is “The Official Arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania”. The arboretum features over 13,000 labeled plants of more than 2,500 types.
Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park is the largest landscaped city park in the world – spanning 8,500 acres. Benjamin Franklin Parkway leads into Fairmount Park from downtown, to the Franklin Institute, Rodin Museum, Horticultural Center, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Over 1000 cherry blossom trees bloom every spring in Fairmount Park.
Be sure to visit the Tyler Arboretum, and take in the history and diversity of its 650 acres of rare plants, hiking trails, and magnificent trees. Located in Media, which is just half an hour west of Philadelphia and 15 minutes south of Newtown Square, the arboretum was started in 1825 by two brothers who dedicated some of their land to the planting of over 1,000 varieties of trees and shrubs.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been working in the City of Philadelphia since 1827, “... to improve the quality of life and create a sense of community through horticulture.” Their exciting Fall Garden Festival is held annually at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, and features the Flower Show Shoppe, Meadowbrook Farm Store, Philadelphia Navy Yard Tours, music and entertainment, and the Young Friends Biergarten. Another popular event sponsored by the PHS is the Philadelphia Flower Show, held annually in the spring at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
